Wood Siding
and Exterior Wall Mold Remediation
Mold inspection, testing,
removal, and prevention for mold growth in exterior wood siding
and other building materials such as stucco and vinyl siding are frequently
needed in moldy homes, condominiums, apartments, offices, and workplaces.
Q.
I
have a Cedar wood siding black mold problem. I live in the forested hills
on a Southwestern exposure lot. I use a semi-transparent stain over Cedar.
Every year I bleach the mold in early spring. Every few years I stain
it. I've been told that the bleach does not kill the mold. Do you
have a permanent solution? [Jan. 10, 2003]
A.
Your first step is to have a
Certified
Mold Inspector: (1) use a
fiber optics inspection device to inspect: INSIDE your exterior wall
cavities for mold infestation; (2) take core mold samples of the
entire thickness of the siding; and (3) test
the air of your indoor rooms for the possible presence of high levels of
unhealthy mold spores. If mold
problems are not found in those 3 areas, then your mold problem is
probably confined to mold growth on the outside of your cedar siding, and
it can be dealt with by several wet sprayings of a

If mold is growing INSIDE your siding, it will need to be replaced. Either
way, seal the exterior after staining with a plastic coating spray to seal
out moisture that is needed for mold growth.
Q.
I have vinyl siding, and we have a bedroom that has wallpaper. We have had
several hurricanes in the past 2 months, lots of water hitting against our
Florida home. The wallpaper started peeling away from the wall, so we
decided to strip the wall, we found many spots of black powdery type mold.
How is the water getting through the vinyl siding, and how can we fix this
problem? I also think we have Mold monsters [like shown in your photograph
at the top of the home page of
Mold Inspector], because of outward bulges in the drywall,
in our ceiling, how do we get rid of this? [October 1, 2004]
A.
Sorry to hear about your experiencing such severe mold problems from the
recent hurricanes in Florida. If you have bulges outward from the ceilings,
and you also see mold growth beneath the wallpaper, you know you have a
serious problem---substantial mold infestation in the walls of your home
which will require opening up the walls and ceilings, use low-cost
Mold Home
Remedy Recipes. In removing the moldy materials, you will be also
removing the vinyl siding which can be washed with Borax laundry detergent,
a natural mold cleaner. Just beneath the vinyl siding should be installed
the best possible rubber moisture barrier recommended by a good siding
contractor, including the professional installation of both the barrier
and the siding by that contractor. The ceiling bulges tell you that It is
very likely that mold growth has already reached into your ceiling and
heating/cooling ducts and equipment. Mold spores from the presently-known
mold contamination locations can travel in air currents to mold
cross-contaminate your entire house and its heating/cooling system. Your
first mold investigative step should be to collect a mold sample of the
various mold growth locations [one mold test kit per area sampled] by
scraping the mold growth into the mold test kit or by using the Scotch
tape lift sampling
technique. Your next diagnostic mold procedure is use our
mold test kits to mold test the air of each room of your house, any
attic/basement/crawl space, and the outward air flow from each
heating/cooling duct register for the possible presence of elevated levels
of airborne mold spores, in comparison to your outdoor mold control sample.
