We looked at house today that we are thinking about purchasing. The
basement has poured concrete walls. The house has been sitting vacant for
some time, so it has a generally musty smell to it. However, the basement
definitely has a stronger smell. There is some sort of black mold growing
along the bottom of an interior wall which is drywalled. Is it normal to
have mold growing on an interior wall? I guess I thought poured walls were
supposed to be a good deterrent for moisture. Any advice you might have
would be helpful.

When there is a strong smell of mold, there is a likely big mold
problem, probably inside the drywall and interior wall timbers. Poured
concrete walls made WITHOUT adequate amounts of waterproofing mixed into the
wet concrete will easily allow water penetration from outdoors to the indoor
areas. In your proposed home to purchase, such concrete water penetration
can drive massive mold growth. Your first step should be to have the home
