Painting Over Mold
Problems
Painting over mold problems does not fix the
underlying mold contamination problem. Mold loves to eat paint, including
even paint which contains mildicides [which only temporarily slow down the
underlying mold growth]. The Kilz product does not kill mold or anything
else. Kilz exists to hide problems [like water damage stains] prior to
painting.
Q. I have been sick since March of 2003. We
have had a major problem with mold that I started getting sick when the
attic started sweating like a rain forest, the soffets had been blocked
and fresh air couldn't get in and there were icicles coming out of the
soffits from the amount of water that was dripping off the attic roof,
rafters and then eventually ruined ceiling and walls. When it finally
got cold out at night the dripping would stop and when we checked it out
in the morning everything was frozen, a nail head looked like a golf
ball and the plywood looked like I blew my snow blower all over it, then
when the sun came out the dripping started all over.
I
eventually got really sick, I had a plural effusion around 1 lung, and
numerous lung taps were done until this year I had a theracotamy therax,
my lung is infected again and no antibiotics will ever take care of it,
so I'm told by my lung Doc. We just got a hold of 6 other types of molds
that were caused by the rain forest, there was 3 before. Since all the
mold had been treated with a latex mold inhibitor and sanded every 2x4
and sub flooring, ceiling joists, etc I'm still sick and my lung is
filling up again because it's still infected. Do you really think the
latex mold inhibitor paint is taking care of the problem in the walls
and in the attic area or do you think the house is still a "sick
building" I really wonder sometimes because I still get the head aches
and everything else that goes with as if the house was never treated.

A. The reason why you may still be sick is that your
mold
remediation efforts are not what it takes to solve the
mold health threat
resident in your home. Painting over mold growth with a latex mold
inhibitor paint is like doing almost nothing to mold remediate your attic
and your home. Ultimately the underlying mold growth will eat through even
mildicide-containing paint. In addition, internal mold growth inside attic
timbers can grow in all directions beneath the painted surface. Use
low-cost Mold Home Remedy Recipes available at Mold
Mart.. As you have already
learned, attic mold easily spreads into the walls and ceilings below.
Those ceilings and walls are going to need to have their drywall removed
and discarded, as one of the 25 steps recommended for safe and effective
mold remediation.
You will not be done with
mold remediation until all areas of your home
and heating/cooling system pass clearance tests done by either yourself or
a Certified Mold Inspector.
Use do it yourself mold test
kits from a large hardware, home improvement, or safety store.
