Mold Legal Guide
as an in depth introduction to both
sides of the key mold legal issues and of the essential claims and defenses
in mold lawsuits.
Ozone is ineffective to remove indoor pollutants
such as mold.
Ozone
schemes claim that tenting a home and then injecting massive amounts of
ozone gas into a home or other building will kill all of the mold in the
building. Ozone can only kill what it comes into contact with. Ozone
cannot get at, and thus cannot kill, mold growing INSIDE drywall, wall,
carpeting, upholstered furniture, wall cavities, ceiling cavities, and
floor cavities. Besides being ineffective at killing hidden mold [the
worst type], ozone readily damages all rubber and plastic parts it comes
into contact with such as rubber and plastic components of appliances,
electronics of all types, exposed electric lines and extension courts, and
hvac controls. Ozone is also unhealthy to humans according to the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency.
"Exposure of a large variety of organisms, including microbes and fungi,
to concentrations of gas-phase ozone...had an impact...but were not
ultimately effective at removing any of them..."
testified by the government expert Eugene
C. Cole to the tests published by the American Industrial Hygiene
Association.
"Concentrations
of ozone...lowered the amount of styrene, 4-ethenylcyclohaxene, and
4-phenylcyclohaxene in a controlled environment, but had nevertheless
increased the level of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in the air."
described
Dr.
Weschler based on an experiment he had conducted about ozone and indoor
pollutants.
Q & A about Ozone
and Mold
Q. I am 9 weeks pregnant and our house
inspection just found attic mold. The mold contractor says that it is most
likely some type in the penicillin family. We got some estimates to remove
it. (We are selling our house and the buyers are demanding we fix it now.)
Some of the contractors we talked with say it's fine to do with a pregnant
person in the house. Others say no they are not comfortable doing that. I
don't know who to believe. My OB/GYN doesn't know too much about this
either. So please if you have any information please pass it on to me. The
contractor we are going to use comes in with a solution 12 times stronger
than bleach.. he cleans and kills it and also uses positive and negative
air pressure in the attic and the rest of the house to help prevent too
many spores from spreading. Then once the cleaning is done he uses a HEPA
air scrubber that releases ozone and ions to kill anything left in the
air. He said we can return to our house that evening. [May 26, 2005]

Ozone is not a a safe, acceptable, or effective mold
remediation tool. It is specifically discouraged for mold remediation by
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Learn the 25 steps you must
insist that your remediator contractor do at
mold remediation. You and your family must be absent the home during
mold remediation. Also, take from the home clothing and all possessions so
that that they can be mold decontaminated outside of the home prior to
putting them back into the house after the house tests as mold-safe by an
independent
certified mold inspector, not involved in the mold remediation
process. Living or working in mold infestation can cause birth defects and
miscarriage. You cannot be in the home during mold remediation because of
the huge numbers of airborne mold spores that will be discharged into the
air, despite the use of negative air machines, etc.
