HOT TIP: Do NOT use chlorine bleach to kill mold or disinfect moldy areas. It is NOT the most effective or lasting killer of mold and mold spores. On most porous, cellulose building materials such as wood timbers, drywall, chipboard, plywood, carpeting/padding, etc., bleach can change the color of the mold, and can even slow down mold growth for about 3 weeks. Please note that a recent study has found that bleach can only kill mold sitting on hard surfaces [such as ceramic floor and wall tile, or a formica kitchen counter, or on the steel skin of an appliance].

Chlorine Bleach Is Not Effective To Kill Mold on Porous Surfaces Such as Wood, Drywall, Plywood, and Wall Paper

           Q. I live in a two year old, five story apartment building in Atlanta, GA. that suffers from a faulty roof and has sustained quite a bit of water damage and visible mold. The property maintenance team was unsuccessful in stopping the leaks during the first year but now seem to have the water under control. Unfortunately, over the course of time, mold developed within the walls of the building. The maintenance team's solution has been diluted Clorox and a fresh coat of paint. My particular unit leaked through the window frame and went over a year until it was recently repaired. I was surprised by the casual nature at
which the Clorox/paint solution was employed, I assumed the frame and drywall were going to be replaced. I did a bit of research online regarding mold and was shocked at what I found regarding the health risks. It was then that I realized I have had two respiratory infections and one eye infection since February. No warnings or statements of these risks have been issued from the leasing office. I cannot financially afford to have the entire building inspected nor do I want to involve an attorney at this time. Do you have any suggestions? [August 8, 2003]
