Q.
My wife and I have a new mobile home in May, 2005 and are experiencing
severe buckling of the floor and mold. Can you shed some light on what kind
of mold this would be and how it should be removed. Our home is structurally
compromised and starting to smell in some areas. The set-up company did not put down a moisture barrier and the manufacturer
says this is not caused by untreated wood.
A.
You should reject and replace this mold-infested home that has what
appears to be severe mold infestation widespread in its flooring. It is
likely that the water damage has caused hidden mold growth inside walls,
floors, ceilings, and the heating/cooling system. From the photo's one of
the mold's, blusih-green is most likely to be the number three most
dangerous indoor mold Penicillium. Have the insides of the floors, walls,
ceilings, and heating/cooling equipment and ducts inspected by a
Certified
Mold Inspector or use do it yourself mold test kits from a large
hardware, home improvement, or safety store. Learn the 25 steps for safe and effective
mold
remediation. Learn about

Q.
I have mold in my
double wide manufactured home and was wondering if you would answer. My home
has Aspergillus, Penicillium and Stachybotrys from a home mold test, I have
had the state fire marshal, my dealer, and manufacturer out to my house. We
know there is some serious fault. The fire marshal gave us some advice that
we needed to have someone check the home that would hold up in a court of
law with the testing and inspection. My family have all have sinus trouble
and my youngest has coughed every breath. That is my main concern for our
health. [October 23, 2004]
A.
You need to move immediately to a mold-safe place to live. Stachy is the
most dangerous indoor mold because it destroys permanently brain tissue.
Aspergillus and penicillium and the second and third most dangerous molds.
Your family is already showing serious mold health
symptoms requiring you to get medical intervention
now. Do not take any clothing [except what you wear, of
course, until you can wash it later with Borax laundry
detergent in water] until you have mold decontaminated
all clothing and personal possessions. The fire
marshal's advice is correct: document the mold health
threat with proper mold inspection and testing. Hire a
Certified Mold Inspector. In case you are thinking about making any
mold claims against the dealer and manufacturer, you should: (1) read our in
depth book Mold Legal Guide, available at
Mold Mart; and (2) hire a good
mold attorney or environmental attorney [how to find one in your area is
explained in the book]. Become your own effective mold expert to improve
your personal home or apartment environmental safety and/or the
environmental health of your investment properties by reading all three of
our mold advice, email delivered books [Mold Health Guide, $15;
Mold Legal Guide, $15; and

Inspection, & Remediation, $15].
Q.
My husband and I and our almost 2 year old son live in a
trailer that we are currently renting until we can
afford to build our future home. The trailer was
manufactured in 1973 and has been on this property for
who knows how long. It has been rented to an estimate of
3 other families before us. The trailer is 'I think' no
place for a family to live, but our plans for a new home
before our son was born fell through. We had planned on
replacing it with a modular home, but our zoning
restrictions wouldn't allow us. We could have had a new
home in 3 weeks, now we have to wait until we can afford
to build a home, which now may take longer than we
expected. The ceiling has leaked for almost 3 years,
haven't been able to afford to fix it. It smells very
dank, dry and humid. We have tried a humidifier, and no
cure. I have suffered sinus infections over the years
since living here. My son has been fighting numerous
medical issues, which as far as I know are not serious,
but may be a concern if this trailer is what is causing
the problems. Since late last year we had problems with
his breathing. We had a bronchoscopy done and found out
that his bronchial tube was not fully formed, which now
causes wheezing, almost like asthma. (This is a little
more detailed than I I have time to explain). In turn
the doctor had asked that there be no candle lighting,
incense burning and such around him. But every now and
then we need to cover the smell of this place. Around
the end of August I had a sinus infection, and as mine
was getting better, my son got one as well. His
pediatrician said to keep an eye on it and contact her
if it does not get better within 10 days. Well, he
seemed better after a week or so, but when we had our
scheduled follow up with the pulmonary specialist, he
said that he still had the sinus infection. He ordered
us a 20 day supply of antibiotics. We just finished up
the last dose last Monday 9/27/04. As of this Monday
10/4/04 he has become sick again, with runny green snot,
choking and gagging, having trouble breathing. I called
the pulmonary specialist today and asked what to do.
They ordered a sinus x-ray and scheduled an appointment
for tomorrow morning. To add to all this we have also
had mice problems for the last year and resulted in us
getting a cat and we also have a dog. Our son has been
tested for dust, mice, animal dander and common
allergies. All tests came back negative.
Do you think there
might be a possibility that our trailer has a bacteria,
mold or mold spores problem that we may not see or even
know about that could be causing all of this? [October
8, 2004]
A.
The long-leaking roof means that there will be massive
mold growth inside the ceilings and walls of your
trailer. The most deadly mold Stachybotrys thrives
especially well in an environment of a long-term water
problem. Elevated levels of airborne mold spores from
the mold growth can easily cause the health troubles
your family is experiencing. If you want to document the
serious mold health threat to your family, use our do it
yourself mold test kits to mold test your entire home
for mold infestation. Test the air of the trailer's
crawl space, each room, and the outward air flow from
each heating/cooling duct register for the possible
presence of elevated levels of airborne mold spores, in
comparison to your outdoor mold control test. You can
buy mold test kits at a large hardware, home improvement
or safety store. You should also collect samples of any
visible mold for mold lab analysis and mold lab mold
species identification by using the Scotch
tape lift
sampling technique.
Collect a different mold sample from each different mold
growth location. You need to move your family out of
this mold hell as soon as possible if you want to avoid
permanent health damage for your family members. Do not
move any clothing or personal property with you unless
you safely and effectively mold decontaminate the items
in accordance with the precise instructions [for each
different type of clothing and personal property]
provided in our in depth book
Do-It-Best-Yourself Mold Prevention, Inspection,
Testing, and Remediation, available at
Mold Mart. The same very practical book provides you
with the step-by-step procedures for safe and effective
mold remediation of the trailer while your family is
temporarily living somewhere else.
Q. We
need help very quickly. We filed a law suit pro se against Foremost
Insurance and we are treading water, barely. We had a great deal of
difficulty getting them to do the appropriate clean up. The adjustor
came out , made an initial assessment authorize certain work and
disappeared for several days. He left mold growing over approx. 900
sq. ft. area of a 2000 sq. ft. home. It is a mobile home and he did
not check under the house on that initial visit. One of the contractors
checked the following day and found a river being held up by the vinyl
sheeting. We could not get a contractor to remove it without
authorization from the insurance company and the company insurance adjuster
did not return calls from us or from two of the contractors. The water
stayed under the house for over a week and the mold was spreading in the
house. The company insurance adjuster would not authorize removal of
soft goods from the house to protect them. He had the furniture and
materials moved to an adjoining room where there was not even a door to
protect the property from mold spores. One of our contractors is
an expert on mold cleanup and they advised we would need to move all of the
furnishing out of the home for treatment as they were exposed to mold
growth. The company insurance adjuster refused to do this. We received
a letter from the insurance adjuster giving what he declared was the
final payment. He said we had voided the contract because we refused to
allow the contractors in to work. We have written statements from the
contractors, stating they were never told to either stop or start work and
putting a lie to the time line he says they communicated to them. The
insurance company has already paid twice the amount that the insurance
adjuster stated as total damages in that letter. Our problem is we are
not lawyers and we do not know how to navigate this system. Please
would somebody out there help us.
We do have pictures, we have a test of several mold plates showing an
overgrowth of mold throughout the house. One of the molds is an
especially toxic one. We also have a letter from a doctor stating
responding to these tests that the house could not to inhabited by any
body. Again, would somebody out there please help. [April 21,
2002]
