Mold Damage
Leaky Roof Water
Damage Mold
Q. I need more
information about mold types and precautions. We had a leaky roof and the water damage caused
a significant hole in our closet. Now, the problem is still there even after a couple of
repairs and it smells like it is damp all of the time. Because of a mold problem in an
apartment I used to live in several years ago, I am familiar with the smell. I smell the
same thing in my bedroom although I cannot see it. How can I determine whether or not
this is toxic mold and/or dangerous for my toddler and I who sleep together on a bed next to
the closet that I think may have a big mold problem? Please advise and/or refer us to the
appropriate company. [Jan. 11, 2003]

Mold Species. A
leaky roof enables plenty of water to enter INSIDE the ceilings and walls, thus causing [after
24 hours of wetness] large-scale mold growth and infestation INSIDE ceiling and wall cavities,
and on and in the wood timbers and other building materials of the ceilings and walls. The
best mold inspection technique to detect water problems and mold problems inside ceiling,
wall, and floors is to cut small [1/2 inch] holes throughout the suspect area and then inspect
same with a fiber optics inspection device, a standard and customary procedure for our
Certified
Mold Inspectors. If mold growth is visually detected, air samples [for mold
laboratory analysis and identification] can be sucked out of the inspection holes by an air
pump attached to either a mold culture plate impactor [best method] or an air sampling
cassette. Mold lab analysis will determine what
Mold Species are
growing in the wall and/or ceiling cavities by the mold spores discovered in the collected air
samples. As an alternative to drawing out air samples, inspection holes in the immediate
vicinity of mold sightings can be enlarged to permit the taking of direct physical samples of
the mold growth. Direct physical
mold sampling is usually better than air sampling to
facilitate accurate mold identification. Also visit:
