Q.
Nov. 26, 2011. I was wondering if your company could come take a look at an
area in my house. We just removed our kitchen counters in order to put new
ones in, and we want to make sure everything is alright (mold-free). I
attached some pics of the odd looking area in the kitchen when we took the
cabinets off. We live in Ontario in Canada.

Your good mold pictures show advanced mold growth in the plywood materials
of both the floor and the wall beneath the removed kitchen cabinets. Please
follow the safety steps and mold remediation steps explained at
Mold Removal so that you don't get mold sick in having these moldy areas
exposed to the air and from the mold remediation steps required to get rid
of the mold effectively and safely. Utilizing safe removal precautions to
protect your and worker health, you need to remove, discard, and replace all
of the moldy plywood shown in your pictures. After removal of the kitchen
mold-infested wood and prior to installation of new wood, you need to
thoroughly mold clean the then exposed areas beneath and behind the moldy
plywood using a strong mold killer like
Tim-Bor. If
you are going to re-install the same kitchen cabinets, expect that those
cabinets will also have mold growth on the bottoms, backside, and inside of
the cabinets. Such kitchen cabinet mold will need to be removed prior to
re-installation of the kitchen cabinets. Otherwise, discard those possibly
moldy kitchen cabinets. You would be helped big-time if you read three of

Q.
I fear due to improper duct work installation and leaks in pipes here and
there, we have had a years of condensation build up on the ceilings and
walls. We have recently remodeled a spare room and discovered some drips and
mold! Do I need to gut the entire house to locate other potential mold
problems?
A.
You can check for mold internally growing inside wall, ceiling, and floor
cavities and materials by drilling 1/2 inch inspection holes into the walls,
ceilings, and floors and then inspecting the interior areas with a fiber
optics inspection device [buy one on the internet or hire a
Certified
Mold Inspector. You also need to mold test the air of each room,
basement, crawl space, attic, and the outward air flow from each
heating/cooling duct register. You can buy do it yourself mold test kits for
mold lab analysis and mold species identification. You can do that with mold test kits or with a
mold inspector. Learn more about do it yourself
