Church Mold Problems
Q.
Jan. 27, 2012. We would like to ask how can we test the air in our
church’s sanctuary for mold spores. We have mold in the basement and
some ladies went down there to clean. We had had church upstairs the
next Sunday and some ladies in church said they got sick. We need to
test our Sanctuary's air to see if spore got upstairs into the air or
not. We don't want to have church in the Sanctuary until we can test
the air. Do you know someone who can do that or can you show us how to
do it ourselves? The inspector one of our deacons called said it would
cost $1300.00 dollars for him to do it and we are a small church with
very little money right now. Thank you for your time on this.

Because your church has budgetary constraints (a big problem for
everyone and every organization these days!), concentrate your limited
church resources on do it yourself, congregation-carried out mold
cleaning of the basement and of the sanctuary floors, walls, and
furnishings, rather than on expensive mold testing.
In lieu of expensive air testing of the sanctuary, you can reasonably presume
that airborne mold spores from the church basement mold will have
traveled in air currents to mold cross-contaminate the sanctuary
upstairs. In addition, it is likely that the mold cleanup workers
carried mold spores from the basement to the sanctuary and their cars
and homes on their shoes, clothing, hair and skin. The
congregation members' getting sick from being in the sanctuary is proof
positive of the mold cross-contamination of the sanctuary. You are wise
to do as you are doing in having no church services in the sanctuary
until after your mold clean up.
The most affordable and effective mold cleaner and mold preventative is
boric acid powder---buy the best quality
boric acid powder. Follow the boric use instructions posted on Mold
Mart's boric page and the 25 steps for safe and effective
mold remediation. Pay particular attention to the posted safety
recommendations so that the mold clean up workers don't get mold
illnesses. You would also be helped big time in organizing the
congregation's
mold clean up campaign by reading my in depth mold advice ebook Do
It Best Yourself Mold Inspection, Testing, Remediation, and Prevention,
also available at Mold Mart. If I can be of further help, please email
me. I am here to serve you and your church congregation. Best wishes,

Q.
Recently my family rejoined the church I grew up in. Our church has had
water damage. I have noticed mold on the doors and kneelers. How can this
mold be removed? I am very concerned about this because I already have a
son that is sick. He will be taking treatment soon and his immune system
may become weak from the treatment. How could this mold affect him?
[Sept. 6, 2003]
A. Attending church religious services
or participating in other church activities [including Sunday school for
young children and youth fellowship meetings, as well as marriage
ceremonies, baptisms, and funerals] in a church building with
mold-infestation can adversely affect
the church members, visitors and guests, their minister or priest or
rabbi, and church staff. Inhaling of elevated levels
airborne mold spores for even an hour
during religious church services can sometimes be enough to initiate
mold
colony growth in one's sinus cavities and lungs. Because your son already
has serious health problems, he is much more at risk for
mold health
damage than most people. Your first step should be to offer to pay for
do it yourself mold test kits to determine the
possible presence of elevated levels of airborne mold spores in the air of
church sanctuary and other church rooms and in the outward airflow from heating/cooling duct
registers, in comparison to an outdoor mold control test. As to the
visible mold, you can collect a sample from each mold growth location
using the Scotch tape lift sampling technique which is explained
and mold test kits available at a large hardware, home improvement or
safety store.
If you cannot afford the mold test kits and mold lab analysis, ask the
church to pay for it or suggest that the pastor or priest or rabbi take up
a special collection to pay for environmental and mold testing of the
church building. Learn how to do safe and effective mold remediation by
